April 10, 2007:
While performing an upgrade to Microsoft Windows Vista, the installer program said that it required updated drivers before the upgrade can proceed, however the devices mentioned were no longer connected to the computer that I was trying to upgrade. I came to the conclusion that since the devices were no longer connected to the system, that the information that the installer was getting came from the Windows registry. So I ran the registry editor and I attempted to delete any registry entries that had the devices the installer mentioned, However, I kept getting the error message "Error deleting key". To get around this, I right clicked on the key and left clicked on "permissions", and after assigning these permissions to the key, the registry entries could then be deleted. After I deleted all the registry entries mentioning those devices, the installation program for Vista proceeded smoothly. The Microsoft Windows Vista upgrade program should come with an option to automatically delete those registry entries, but unfortunately, it does not.
